THE YELLOW WALLPAPER
A devised work based on text by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
~~~
In the summer of 1892, a woman named Jane is brought by her husband John to an old country house following the birth of their child to cure her “temporary nervous depression–a slight hysterical tendency.” John, a doctor, has recommended a summer of rest and isolation as a treatment for her condition. However, Jane’s confinement to a former nursery lined with abhorrently-colored yellow wallpaper quickly begins to grate on her nerves and mind. As recounted by a series of progressively more frenetic journal entries, Jane increasingly sees movement and undulation in the wallpaper’s pattern – revealing the figure of a woman trapped behind its intricate lines.
